Things to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or just how to overcome your senior autumn)



The time had come. My bachelor’s degree had been newly in hand, and I also decided to accept the job that is first was being offered ( it had been the Great Recession and the fear of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working together with senior school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to become a great fit for me! I discovered many things working at a high school (do you realize there’s an app that calculates the likelihood you will obtain a snowfall day?!), and each fall was a concept in how difficult it really is to become a 12^th grader.

Senior is tough year! You’re in your hardest classes to date, you are accepting increasingly more obligations, you’re hitting a milestone virtually every week…and then we ask you to college. 12^th grade may never be effortless, however you can easily make it less hard. Though each student’s college process is unique, you can find a handful of behaviors/mind sets that I have experienced cause unnecessary stress time and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Appocalypse that is common by some I mean me), but they have been all avoidable if you know how exactly to recognize the signs!

 Focusing too much on everything you can’t change.

Do you keep worrying all about that C you’ve got in freshman English? Are you regretting your final decision to quit the track team? Many students invest their senior fall focusing on the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery. Instead of stressing about things you can’t change, take your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior year grades, and putting together the application that is best you can. Think upward and forward!

Ignoring the advice of your elders.

Do you nod whenever your therapist speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your task? I am shocked…really, I Will Be. Keep in head that, with it,’ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application process (and even help you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them) while they might not always be ‘hip and. Ignoring their advice can cut you faraway from some pretty valuable information, so why not take all of the help it is possible to get?

Dropping in love.

No, we’m not referring to the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for years (them already) though you should really just tell! I’m talking about the head-over-heels feeling students sometimes get for one college on their list. There’s a distinction between having a choice that is first being so fixated for a school that you can’t even fathom going anywhere else. It’s called the faculty process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! Though I sincerely hope you’re admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and discover a number of institutions you’ll love to go to.

Avoidance.

Are you currently leaving things to your minute that is last? Are you currently putting off looking up what supplementary essays you need to write? Are you currently reading this post on 14th january? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works best under force (trust me…this is a ‘do as I say, much less I do’ situation). Multiple drafts are the key up to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the actual only real defense against an application that is sloppy. You have enough on your dish year that is senior. If you do not yet have a plan for how you are going to finish most of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! You do not desire to rush (or worse, forget something) in this process. So stop scanning this blog and get to work— you are known by me can perform it!

Pupil Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to start working with our weblog. While coming up with subject ideas, I thought of common questions we have from potential pupils and one of my favorites is always: what’s it like to be considered a student at USC? And even though I’m an alumna of the university and had my own experiences… that is great actually want you to hear from current students with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all the cool things I need certainly to say (many of you get enough of that), I’ll find current students to let you know about their experiences. For our first installment, we now have Edwin Saucedo, the pupil Body President for the Undergraduate scholar Government. He’s originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this May that is coming 2017. Here is what he previously to say:

Four years ago, I found myself where many of maybe you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with looking for the college that is perfect. It absolutely was hard enough trying to navigate college applications when neither of my parents talked English or had pursued degree themselves. The stress of finding the best place to invest the following four years was extremely overwhelming.

As I think straight back at my college application process the very first thing i must say is, everything worked out much better than i possibly could have ever anticipated. When I applied to college we never thought I would personally end up at USC. I expanded up in South Gate, CA where just 6% regarding the population that is total a college degree. It’s obvious, We never imagined I would find myself being the pupil Body President my year that is senior here. The four years in between my senior year of high college and senior year of university have induced a wide range of lessons, experiences, and friendships I never expected. However, the combination of all these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.

Being Student Body President at the most prestigious universities in the country is an daunting job. It is not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who come from over 100 different countries, are of all various races, and have really diverse economic backgrounds. However, it is also a tremendously opportunity that is rewarding. Every i get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how can I make this university a better place for all students day? That is our objective in student government, to create the best undergraduate experience, which is why I decided to run for this place spring that is last.

I invest at the least twenty hours every week listening to students’ experiences, asking them how I could be of any service, and connecting them towards the proper channels on this campus. On one other side of things, we advocate on their behalf to https://shmoop.pro/buy-lab-report-online/ administration in efforts to generate better campus policies, address any issues, and plan for future years of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the info we discovered from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these issues.

In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and creative thinkers. We challenge each other’s ideas and provides suggested statements on improvements. At the end of the day, we produce proposals on how to address each and each issue. It is through these innovative proposals that we’ve been able to get our students uber that is free from 7pm to 2 am and have actually gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work does not end there. Over the length of the 12 months our student government places on over 300 free events for our pupils. These are priced between intimate discussions about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or designers like Diplo for our students to take pleasure from.

We shape the undergraduate experience and give students the ability to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is exactly what college is all about. No matter yourself and be challenged by others whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your new home, dare to challenge. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my very own, they’re not wrong or right but different, and that is okay.

You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. College is a right time to explore and find your passion. I found my passion within student government and working towards enhancing USC for present and future students. For you, that passion may lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get prepared to embark in a new journey full of unique and exciting experiences.
